Our Story - Kakera Villa Apartments Rarotonga
|
More than twenty years ago, we moved from Auckland to Rarotonga with a simple dream - a quieter life, raising our family in a small island village surrounded by lagoon, land, and community. The call of Andrew’s heritage - his ancestral lines stretching back to the rugged beauty of Mangaia and the heart of Rarotonga - was strong. We wanted our children to grow up not just visiting the islands, but belonging to them.
At first, we imagined a very simple life. Some of it worked, some of it didn’t. Like many who arrive in the islands, we learned that true simplicity isn’t about doing without - it’s about slowing down, paying attention, and living closely with people and place. One afternoon in the lagoon, watching our children play in the warm water, the idea for Kakera Villa Apartments was born. What began as a dream slowly became reality through years of planning, building, and family effort. Six years later the apartments were completed - designed and built by us, and shaped by the island environment we had come to love. Since then, we have welcomed guests from around the world and shared this special corner of Rarotonga with them. Our children are now grown and have started their own adventures. We are incredibly proud that they continue to represent the Cook Islands on the international sporting stage and remain deeply connected to their home here. We hope that during your stay, you experience a little of what first drew us here - space to relax, time to connect, and the quiet magic of island life. Kia Manuia, Andrew & Melinda Ponga |
