We designed and built our little eco cottage in 2016 using as many recycled items as we could possibly find and had previously collected. The goal was to set up a sustainable living environment that did not create any damage to our much loved half acre of family land. Learning from Muri’s septic tank pollution issues we choose to set up using soak pit grey water and self composting toilet systems, which require occupants to consider what they put in to the waste water (like only eco products) and manage their body waste in the most environmentally sound way. Not everyone is ready for this, but we feel that eco septic and water systems are essential for what we leave for future generations. The cottage has a little foot print with each space in the home being functional. Currently set up with half solar/power lighting which is both economic on the power grid and the wallet. Using minimal wall finishing products for environmental and aesthetic reasons, the wood decor offers a light and natural feeling with indoor outdoor design which creates good air flow throughout this relaxing space. The cottage home is simple yet fine, with furnishings, including wool/ linen and lace curtains and rugs. The two bedrooms have two eco bathrooms of them, the master bathroom also services as the laundry with clothesline area on the master bedroom deck. The master room bed is a super comfy queen and the second room a standard double. The kitchen is set up with lots of non matching items, filtered drinking water tap and gas oven. Set in a rural location only minutes from the main road, lots the screened windows take in views of the growing fields around the cottage and look directly at the inland tropical mountains this home is at the base of. Best suited to those serious about sustainable living and with some eco experience. Offering a comfortable Island style small home for those who enjoy simple eco living.
